Ceiling height first. Standard 2.4m UK ceilings work for flush and semi-flush mounts — anything with less than 30cm drop. Statement chandeliers, pendants and clusters need 2.6m+ to clear heads at the dining table. Sloped or vaulted ceilings work best with adjustable-chain chandeliers like the Solla, which compensate for angle.

Then the room. Living rooms take chandeliers or pendant clusters as focal pieces. Dining tables centre on a single statement pendant 80-90cm above the surface. Kitchens need uniform task light from a flush or linear LED. Hallways and small bedrooms suit unobtrusive Nordic disc designs.
