Start with height and reach. Most floor lamps stand 150-180cm tall — fine for sofas and armchairs, but check ceiling clearance under sloped roofs. For reading by a chair, look for adjustable arms like the Milo curved or the Natalie LED so you can angle light onto the page without glare. For ambient corner light, fixed designs like the Noguchi Akari diffuse evenly without a hotspot.

Then the light itself. Warm white (2700-3000K) LED suits living rooms and bedrooms — softer, closer to candlelight. Neutral white (4000K) is better for task lighting in studies or home offices. Most of our lamps accept dimmable E27 bulbs, so you can dial brightness down for evenings and up for reading without swapping fixtures.
