Start with position. Mount centred 60-80cm above the mattress, or hang a pendant 40-60cm down so the bulb sits at shoulder height when you're sitting up. The Brass Hanging Bedside drops on adjustable cord; the Lyndi rotatable swivels 330° — useful when you sleep on the opposite side from your partner.

Then the switch and bulb. Look for an in-line cord switch or pull cord if you don't want to reach to the wall every night. Most of our fixtures accept dimmable E27 or built-in LED at 2700K — warm enough for reading without keeping the room awake.

Best in: couples' bedrooms (paired, one each side), single bedrooms (single hanging pendant), guest rooms (rotatable for flexibility), and study bedrooms where you need to read in bed without an overhead light. Most models hardwire or plug-in via a discrete cord.
