IP rating first. IP44 handles splashes — fine for covered porches and balconies. IP65 handles rain — needed for exposed facades and gardens. IP67 handles submersion, overkill for most homes but useful for ground-mounted spots near ferns or pond edges. Our Ackerman is IP67 and Simeon IP65, both sealed for the UK climate.

Then placement. Wall lights at door height (180-200cm) mark entries. Strip bars wash entire facades — fit them along the underside of a soffit. Up/down sconces throw light in two directions, useful between windows. Pillar and bollard lights mark driveways and garden paths without spilling into windows.

Best in: villa facades and entryways (statement wall lights like Stone Wall LED), porches and covered balconies (IP44-rated wall-mounted), garden paths and driveways (bollards or pillar lights), pool and decking edges (IP67 ground or strip), and modern minimalist exteriors (Simeon-style LED strip bars).
